Nifty Utilities is a growing collection of free, browser-based utilities for the small jobs that come up in everyday financial, home, business, and document work: cleaning a messy bank-statement CSV, estimating what a boat or a dog truly costs per year, splitting expenses with roommates, generating a printable bill of sale, or checking a filing deadline. Every tool runs entirely inside your web browser.
For when you almost opened Excel — but didn't want to
Most of these tools live in the gap between "too small to open a big app for" and "too annoying to do by hand." You almost launched Excel to dedupe a list, almost fired up an accounting suite to tidy one statement, almost installed something to resize an image — and then didn't want the friction. Nifty Utilities is the quiet toolbox for exactly those moments: open a page, do the one thing, close the tab.
Why this site exists
Most "free online tools" ask you to upload your spreadsheet, your statement, or your photo to a server you know nothing about. For the kinds of files these tools handle — bank exports, receipts, personal inventories — that always felt like the wrong trade. Nifty Utilities was built around the opposite default: the tool comes to your data, not the other way around. There is no account to create, nothing to install, and no upload step, because there is no server on our side that could receive your files in the first place.
How it works
Nifty Utilities is a static website. Calculations and file processing happen in JavaScript on your own device. When you drop a CSV into a cleaner or type figures into a calculator, that information is read, processed, and displayed by your browser and is never transmitted to us. A handful of advanced tools load an open-source library from a public CDN so it can run in your browser; even then, your inputs stay local. The full detail is on our privacy page.
How the estimates are built
The cost calculators — the "real cost of owning a…" series and the rest — are designed to total the recurring expenses people most often forget, not to hand you a single national average. We deliberately avoid presenting specific dollar figures as fact, because real costs vary enormously by region, size, age, and usage. Instead, each tool breaks a decision into its true cost categories and asks you to supply the figures for your own situation, while the accompanying article explains what drives each line and where to find a local number you can trust. The goal is a realistic estimate you built yourself, not a guess we made for you.
Who builds it
Nifty Utilities is built and maintained by Jacob Briggs, an independent developer. It started as a handful of personal utilities and grew into a public toolbox. Tools are added and revised regularly, and reader email genuinely shapes what gets built and fixed next.
Accuracy and limits
These tools provide estimates and general-purpose documents, not financial, tax, legal, or professional advice. They are a strong starting point for a decision or a draft, but important results and documents should be reviewed with a qualified professional before you rely on them.
