How zodiac compatibility actually works

Sun-sign astrology sorts the year into twelve signs, and traditional compatibility comes from how those signs relate to one another. Three ideas do most of the work: the four elements (fire, earth, air, water), the three qualities or modalities (cardinal, fixed, mutable), and the angle between two signs around the zodiac wheel. Put together, they explain why some pairs feel instantly easy and others feel like a fascinating challenge.

The four elements

Fire signs — Aries, Leo, Sagittarius — are passionate, spontaneous, and driven. Earth signs — Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn — are grounded, practical, and loyal. Air signs — Gemini, Libra, Aquarius — are social, curious, and ideas-first. Water signs — Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces — are emotional, intuitive, and deep.

As a rule of thumb, signs of the same element understand each other easily. Fire and air are natural allies, because air feeds fire the way conversation and ideas feed enthusiasm. Earth and water nourish each other, the way steady ground gives feeling a safe place to grow. The trickier mixes — fire with water, earth with air, fire with earth — are not doomed; they simply ask each partner to appreciate a way of moving through the world that isn't their own.

The three qualities

The modalities describe how a sign operates. Cardinal signs (Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn) start things and like to lead. Fixed signs (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius) sustain things and are famously loyal and stubborn. Mutable signs (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces) adapt and go with the flow. Two signs of the same quality often share values but can also clash in the same way — two cardinal signs may quietly compete to lead, while two fixed signs can dig in and refuse to budge. A mix of qualities usually shares the work more comfortably: one starts, one sustains, one adapts.

The angle between signs

The distance between two signs on the wheel creates a traditional "aspect," and each aspect has a flavour. Signs of the same sign form a conjunction — deep familiarity. Two signs apart is a sextile, and four apart is a trine — both easy, harmonious angles that tend to line up with compatible elements. Three apart is a square, a high-energy angle full of attraction and friction. Directly across the wheel is an opposition, the classic "opposites attract," where each sign is the other's missing half. The in-between angles — the semisextile and quincunx — pair signs that are simply wired very differently and grow through patience.

Why some signs "work better" together

Putting it together, the pairings that feel easiest usually combine a harmonious element relationship with a comfortable angle — a trine between two water signs, say, or a sextile between fire and air. Those couples tend to "get" each other with little translation. The most magnetic pairings are often oppositions, where the pull is strong precisely because the two are so different. And the pairings that ask for the most effort — squares and mixed elements — are frequently the most passionate, because the friction that causes the arguments is the same friction that creates the spark. In astrology, "challenging" rarely means "wrong"; it means "interesting, with homework."

How to use your result

Enter both signs above and you'll get a compatibility percentage, the specific dynamic between your two signs, the concrete strengths you bring each other, and a short, honest list of what to watch for. Read the strengths as encouragement and the watch-outs as gentle heads-ups, not warnings. If you don't know a sign offhand, switch the input to "by birthday" and it will work out the sign for you from the month and day.

A word of perspective

This tool looks only at sun signs, which is the tip of the astrological iceberg — a full chart also weighs the moon, rising sign, and the positions of the planets, and even then astrology is a symbolic language rather than a science. Plenty of "incompatible" couples are blissfully happy and plenty of "perfect" matches never get off the ground. Treat this as a playful mirror for thinking about how two people are wired, enjoy the parts that ring true, and don't let a percentage decide anything that matters.

Frequently asked questions

Is it free? Completely — no sign-up, no email, no credit card. Your full breakdown appears instantly.

Do you store my birthday? No. If you enter a date, only the month and day are used to find the sign, and nothing is uploaded or saved. Refresh the page and it's gone.

Can I check friendships or family, not just romance? Absolutely. The element, quality, and angle dynamics apply to any relationship — friends, siblings, coworkers, or a new date.

What if we're a "low" match? A lower percentage just means your signs are wired differently and it takes a bit more translation. It says nothing about a real relationship, which depends on the actual people far more than their signs.

Important

Astrology is offered here for entertainment and reflection, not as science, prediction, or advice. Compatibility notes describe traditional sign symbolism, not your actual relationship. Real people are far more than their star sign.
