How much does it cost to move?
Moving costs are easy to underestimate because the bill arrives from multiple directions at once: labor, the truck or moving company, fuel for the drive, packing supplies, and often a night of lodging. This calculator brings all of those lines together so you can see a realistic total before you commit to a timeline or sign a lease.
Movers and labor
Professional movers are typically charged by the hour, with a rate that covers a crew of two or three people. The number of hours depends on the size of your home, how much is pre-packed, whether there are stairs or a long carry, and how organized the move is. Rates vary by city, season, and day of the week; weekends and the end of the month are typically more expensive. Enter the number of hours you expect and the hourly rate you have been quoted for a labor-based estimate.
Truck rental
If you are handling the move yourself, truck rental is the primary vehicle cost. Rental rates vary by truck size, rental company, season, and pickup location. One-way rentals to a distant city often carry a mileage surcharge or a drop fee on top of the base daily rate. Get quotes from multiple companies and confirm what is and is not included before committing.
Distance and fuel cost per mile
For a self-move, fuel is a significant variable cost that scales with distance and vehicle fuel efficiency. A large moving truck will use substantially more fuel per mile than a passenger vehicle. The cost-per-mile field is designed to capture fuel cost; you can also include per-mile truck rental fees in this field if your rental is structured that way.
Boxes and supplies
Packing materials add up quickly for a full-home move: boxes in multiple sizes, tape, bubble wrap, packing paper, markers, and furniture pads or blankets. You can reduce this cost by sourcing free boxes from grocery stores, liquor stores, or community buy-nothing groups. Professional packing services, if you use them, are a labor cost separate from supplies.
Lodging
For moves of several hundred miles or more, one or more nights in a hotel are often necessary. Enter the expected lodging cost here. Meals on the road and incidentals can be folded into the other costs field if you want to capture them.
Other costs
Moving costs that do not fit the other categories include utility setup fees, storage if there is a gap between move-out and move-in, tips for movers, cleaning services for the old or new home, and the cost of replacing items that do not survive the move. The note produced by this calculator suggests adding a ten-percent buffer as a practical cushion for these variables.
How to use this calculator
Enter your best estimates for each category, using quotes where available and reasonable estimates where not. The result shows a total alongside the buffer recommendation. Updating the fields as actual quotes come in will bring the estimate closer to reality. Everything is calculated in your browser; nothing you type is sent to us or stored on a server.
Frequently asked questions
What is the cheapest way to move?
The lowest-cost approach is typically a self-move using a rented truck, with free or low-cost boxes, and help from friends or family instead of hired movers. The tradeoff is time, effort, and the risk of damage to belongings or injury. For long-distance moves, a portable storage container can sometimes bridge the cost between full-service movers and a DIY truck rental.
How much do movers typically charge?
Hourly rates and flat-fee structures vary considerably by region, the size of your home, and the distance of the move. Local moves are almost always priced by the hour; long-distance moves are more often priced by weight or flat fee. Get at least two or three quotes before deciding, and confirm whether insurance, fuel, and stair or elevator fees are included in the quoted rate.
When is the cheapest time to hire movers?
Demand for movers peaks at the end of the month, on weekends, and during summer. If your timeline is flexible, scheduling a weekday move in the middle of the month during fall, winter, or early spring often results in lower rates and better availability.
