How to split shared expenses with roommates

Shared housing reduces the cost of rent and utilities for everyone involved, but money disagreements are one of the most common sources of roommate conflict. Having a clear, agreed-upon split from the start eliminates most of those conversations. This tool takes your roommates' names and your list of shared expenses and calculates what each person owes.

Roommate names

Enter the names of everyone sharing the expenses, separated by commas. The tool divides the total equally among them. If you and your roommates have agreed to a different arrangement, you can use the per-person totals as a baseline and adjust outside the tool. The equal split is the most common starting point for shared housing costs.

Shared expenses

Enter each shared expense on its own line in the format "name, amount," for example "Rent, 1800" or "Electric, 130." The tool adds them together and divides by the number of roommates. Common shared expenses include rent, electricity, gas, water, internet, streaming services shared by the household, and any shared household supplies you choose to split. Expenses that only some roommates use, such as a parking spot or a personal streaming account, are typically kept separate and not entered here.

How to use this calculator

Enter the roommates' names and the list of shared expenses, then click Split expenses. The result shows the total shared spending and the amount each person owes. Because the split is equal, you can scale it up or down by adjusting who is included. Everything is calculated in your browser; nothing you type is sent to us or stored on a server.

Frequently asked questions

What shared expenses should roommates split?

The standard items to split are rent, electricity, gas, water and sewer, trash, and internet. Some households also split a shared Netflix or other streaming account, common groceries, and household cleaning supplies. Personal expenses, individual food, and private subscriptions are generally kept separate. Agreeing on the list upfront prevents disagreements later.

How do you split rent when rooms are different sizes?

This calculator uses an equal split. For unequal splits based on room size or other factors, you can determine the percentage each person pays by agreement and then multiply the total rent by each person's share. The resulting per-person rent amounts can then be added to the equal split of shared utilities using this tool or tracked separately.

What is the best way to collect money from roommates?

Peer-to-peer payment apps make collection straightforward because they create a record of each transfer. Designating one person to pay all shared bills and then collecting reimbursements from the others is a common approach that keeps the number of transactions small. Agreeing on payment timing, typically a few days before the bills are due, prevents late fees from becoming a shared problem.
