Tip and split in one step

The awkward moment at the end of a meal is rarely the tip percentage itself — it's dividing the tipped total across the table without someone doing mental long division. This tool does both at once: it calculates the tip, adds it to the bill, and splits the result evenly, showing the per-person figure as the headline number. Change the number of people and everything recalculates instantly.

What counts as a normal tip

In U.S. table-service restaurants, 15% is generally considered the low end for adequate service, 18–20% is the common range for good service, and above 20% rewards service that stood out. Counter service, coffee, and takeout are more discretionary. The tool defaults to 18% as a sensible middle, but the point is to let you set whatever number fits — it's your call, and the math adjusts the moment you change it.

The rounding options

Uneven splits produce uncomfortable numbers like $23.47 per person. Two rounding choices smooth that over. Round the total up nudges the whole bill to the next dollar and recomputes the tip, which slightly raises the tip. Round each person up pushes every individual share up to a whole dollar, which is the friendliest option when everyone is paying cash or sending the same round number — it also quietly bumps the tip a little, since the collected total now exceeds the tipped bill. The tool shows the effective tip percentage so you can see exactly what the rounding did.

Tip on the pre-tax or post-tax total?

Etiquette guides differ, but tipping on the pre-tax subtotal is perfectly acceptable and slightly more logical, since tax isn't part of the service. If you'd rather tip on the pre-tax amount, enter the subtotal as the bill; if you don't want to fuss, entering the post-tax total is fine and only changes the tip by the tax rate. Either way the split math is identical.

Runs entirely in your browser

Nothing you type is sent anywhere, and there's no account. For splitting recurring household costs rather than a one-off meal, the Roommate Expense Splitter divides rent and utilities, and the Percentage Calculator handles any other percent-of-a-number question.

Frequently asked questions

How do I split a bill with a tip between friends?

Enter the bill, set the tip percentage, and set "split between" to the number of people. The per-person total — bill plus tip, divided evenly — is shown as the main number.

How much should I tip?

For U.S. table service, 18–20% is standard for good service, with 15% on the low end. The tool defaults to 18% but lets you set any percentage.

Should I tip on the total with tax or without?

Either is acceptable; tipping on the pre-tax subtotal is slightly more logical. Enter whichever amount you prefer as the bill — the split works the same way.
